The structure of Clan Ethereal is a simple hierarchy shown in Figure 1.

The ultimate power in Clan Ethereal is the council, consisting of 5 members. The council’s member’s primary job/function is to guide the direction of the clan. The council will also resolve problems between members, captains and division leaders. All decisions made by the council will be made in accordance with section 4.2 and will be final. Council members will be elected in accordance with 4.1.

In Clan Ethereal there be five types of members,

• Division members
• Council members
• Division leaders
• Division captains
• Life members

A division member is somebody who is actively involved in a particular game and is training and playing with other members of that division. These members will be eligible to play in competitive games with in that division. Division members should be reasonably committed to their chosen game and division, and should make an effort to stay current with clan and game developments, and maintain a regular presence on voice communications. Division members will be dropped to inactive status if they don’t wish to play in competitive matches.

Council members are the decision makers inside the clan. There are only five council members and all major clan decisions will be voted upon by them. Decisions will be passed by a majority rules system. On the council there should be at least one representative from each division.

A game division will only be started when the council passes a vote authorising a new division to be created. A division can only exist if the game, which it was created for, is in final released form. Every game division will NEED to have a presence on a competition ladder.

Each game division will be lead by a division leader. Division leaders will be responsible for the running of their division as they see fit.

Division leaders CANNOT be captains or leaders in other divisions.

The division leader will appoint division captains. The captain’s main roles will be to support their division leaders in the running of that division. There can be one or more captains in each division.

Each game division will have two types of members. Those being

• Active members
• Inactive members

Members of a particular division, who frequently play their chosen game, check up on game/clan developments and converse online with other division members via voice communications.

Members of a particular division who, for any reason, are unable to maintain a consistent online presence.

Clan members can be nominated for Life Membership of the clan as recognition of exceptional services to the Clan.

• Before any player starts a trial with Clan Ethereal they meet several criteria.
• Minimum 256 kbs internet connection
• Minium age of 16
• Competent in the operation of voice communications (i.e. come through loud and clear without any feedback).

Several other things are expected from the player while on trial. These include,

• Coming on Voice communications, while other clan members are present, about 5-7 times while on trial. This 5-7 times must be in the presence of somebody who will be making the final decision on his or her entry into the clan.
• Chat to other members of Clan Ethereal while on Voice communications
• Participate in a scrim with other members of Clan Ethereal

The final decision on whether your trial has been successful or unsuccessful will be made by your division leader and captains. Unfortunately not everyone is suited to the goals and responsibility’s needed to be a member of Ethereal.

A new member of the council will only be added if a current member of the council leaves. Before the departing council member leaves they will vote with the other 4 members of the council to select a replacement council member. If a decision cannot be made by the council members it will be passed on to the Division members to make the decision. This is the only time a new council member can be voted in, hence if at that time there is no representative of a certain division on the council, the division will have to wait until a spot opens up.

A vote will be called in the council when a poll is entered in the Council section of the forums. The question to be voted on can be anything as long as the answers to the question are of a YES or NO nature. When 3 votes have been registered either YES or NO voting will cease and the vote will be passed or blocked depending on which way the vote went. It is expected that council members will NOT look at the results before voting.

New division leaders will be elected by a majority rules direct vote from the active members in that division. If a new division is starting the council will appoint the division leader.

The election of captains for a division will be at the discretion of the division leader

Any clan member can nominate another member for recognition. The nominee must have been a clan member for at least 6 months. The final decision of approval of Life Members is made by the Ethereal Council, Leaders and Captains. Nominations will open on the 7th of July and close the 28th of July. Announcement of Life Members will be made on the 7th of August the Clans foundation date. This process will be repeated 6 months later with nominations opening on the 7th of January and closing on the 28th of January and announcement on the 7th of February.

• Have fun.
• Be yourself and express yourself.
• All exploits are frowned upon (Including graphics glitches etc)
• No deliberate team killing.
• No harassment of other players
• Be nice to new players on public servers.
• Minimise the amount of voice spam on public servers.
• If you want to be stupid, alias.
• If for some reason you wouldn’t be able to visit the forum or come on voice communications, please post in the forums with an estimation of time which you will be away

• Check the clan website/forums daily
• Play regularly with other clan members
• When you play online, you are EXPECTED to be on voice communications
• You can only wear the clan tag while playing a game which you are a division member of.

At the core of Clan Ethereal is the use of voice communications. Therefore, several guidelines exist for using voice communications,

• Under no circumstances are any members, social or divisional, allowed to irritate other clans in their channels.
• Generally don’t play stupid voice communications games
• If a division is playing a competition game, only members of that division are allowed in that division channel during that time.

Will access to all parts of the forum and website

Will have admin rights on the forum.

Will have access to private clan sections in the forums.
If a division leader kicks out a player from their division, that player will have the right of appeal to the Council.

Will be able to vote for potential future Life Members.
Have access to further private areas of the forum.

Whilst we may seem to have a large number of guidelines, that’s all they are – recommendations. We have no intention of mandating and controlling every individual aspect of each member – we want people to be free to be themselves in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. The guidelines only exist so people have a general idea what we expect and desire from them as members, and as people.

There will be times when someone on a server deserves nothing less than a team kill or harassment, so if it’s truly justified, enjoy yourself. Never feel restricted from expressing your opinion on a matter. A tag does not grant anyone a higher level of awareness and perception that somehow makes your ideas and opinions invalid. In fact it’s quite often the opposite. Hand out the “Useless Medic of the Map” award where appropriate.
